Quo vadis Explainable Artificial Intelligence? A State-of-the-Art Overview and Research Agenda

Type: Bachelor Thesis

Date: starting immediately

Problem Statement

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly relevant in high-stake domains, such as finance or healthcare. However, the underlying AI systems are often referred to as “black boxes” whose behavioral patterns are difficult to understand. Against this backdrop, there has been a surge of interest in Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) to promote human understanding and trust in the use of AI systems. However, due to the interdisciplinary nature of this research field, it is important to obtain a state-of-the-art review of literature findings that brings together the strands of different fields of research. To this end, this Bachelor thesis aims to conduct a systematic literature review and establish a research agenda based on this review.

Goals of the Thesis

  • State-of-the-art review of XAI research by conducting a systematic literature review
  • Development of a research agenda for XAI research on this basis

Requirements

  • Interest in the field of XAI
  • The thesis and exposé can be written in either English or German
